Nameless Familiar (Sprites)
Familiars are creatures born of the magic created by tol waves. They are the sentient manifestation of a Rune or True Word and its guardian. It is impossible to kill or injure a familiar due to its lack of the 3 main properties of being. These three being body, mind, and soul. A familiar is able to mimic all three of these properties with enough willpower and belief. While most scholars are not sure why, some theorize that this is an evolutionary prey/predator response, similar to how some species mimic others to gain an advantage in survival. Why a familiar has an instinctual need to survive is still a mystery.
Once a True Word/Rune is established, a nameless familiar, known as a sprite, will attempt to build its purpose into that word. This means that no matter when, where, and or how the rune is used, the same familiar will appear. However, it has been documented that some familiars may lose their True Word/Rune to another sprite. Sometimes this is done willingly and other times this is done unwillingly. Often when a TrueWord/Rune is taken, the form of the new familiar will change. Since familiars try to mimic properties of being, the general assumption is that the form is based on what the sprite witnessed as a sprite to showcase the association of its word. For example, one sprite with the True Word/Rune “Fire”, may take on the familiar form of a fiery snake, whereas another sprite with the True Word/Rune “Fire”, may take on the familiar form of a hawk made of cinders.
